I like all kinds of music, especially Irish music and electronic. I have a dream someday of forming the first techno bagpipe band. I own far too many CDs. I can play the piano (mostly classical, popular, and bad jazz), and I'm a hack at the guitar. Wrote some pretty good songs, but I have hundreds of them left unfinished. Still trying to learn the mandolin, accordion, and saxophone. Someday, I'd like to be able to play Irish fiddle tunes at the various sessions around Denver. Practice, practice, practice. Check out some songs I've written, and ones that are half finished. And here's some songs I've actually recorded on a Tascam four-track.
I love computers. My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 1. Twenty years too late, I now own an Apple II and an Atari 2600 VCS. I also found a Vectrex and a ColecoVision, I am looking for an Atari 5200 and a cheap black-and-white-and-gray Mac.
Since I lived in Colorado, you know I'm into snowboarding. However, after eight years off and on, I'm still not very good at it. I like my Burton "floater" snowboard with step-in bindings.
I used to be active in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). I fight both light and heavy weapons, though I'm not very good at it. I've gone to Pennsic War, Estrella, Fool's War and other events all over the country. Sometimes, I also fence in the SCA, and do some juggling, cooking, calligraphy, and sewing.
I can juggle, and I'm working on 5 balls and 4 clubs (though not all at once!), and I'm a member of the International Juggling Association. I'd like to be the first person to juggle 4 bowling balls at the same time. I also like "contact juggling" and "object manipulation" (ask me about folding chairs and slinkies). I bought a Miyata unicycle, but still can't ride it.
I also like art; whether it is film, painting, sculpture, dance, or music. See my page of "best of" lists. I'd like to learn both French and Japanese, but I never quite got the hang of either. Maybe I will be able to learn Italian this year.
I have a page of movie reviews. I'll try to update it as I see more new releases. I recently bought a DVD player. I'm also trying to get involved in tape trading.
I was ice skating for a while, but I've given up. My goal was to be able to land an axle without breaking my leg. I've been running a lot lately (every day!), especially on my indoor treadmill. I ran the Bolder Boulder in under an hour. However, I'd like to go back to lifting weights two or three times a week, and I just joined a cheap rec center near my house. For a while, I playeddefense with the Colorado Climax hockey team.
I am a Democrat. I'm an all-too-infrequent crusader for women, equal rights, public education, prison reform, welfare, abortion choice, free speech, feminism, immigration, gay rights, the environment, minorities, cheap housing, prison system reform. I'm against school vouchers, the flat tax, Mother Theresa, and religion in general. I'm ambivalent about guns, animal rights, vegetarianism, social security, the death penalty, and crime. For more, see, my political page.
Here are some museums I'd like to visit someday.
eBay! Lately I've been trading like a maniac. I'm a sucker for for "stereoviews", old scientific instruments, musical instruments, old photographs, postcards, puzzles, board games, videogames, and CDs. Check it out for yourself, but don't bid against me or I'll crush you.
Travel. In the past five years I've been to: Amsterdam, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Des Moines, Hamburg, Houston, Jacksonville, Key West, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Monterrey, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Paris, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Rhode Island, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Seattle, Vancouver, and several other places in between. Take a look at my travel page to see some of my favorite places to visit.
Here's my opinion of local Denver and Boulder CD stores.
I also read a lot of books. You can see a list of my favorite books, or at Amazon.com, I have a list of books I'd like to buy. And of course, my "new" page always lists what I'm currently reading.
I like to cook, when I have the time. I really like to have a recipe, though. I'm not too good at "faking it" using only ingredients at hand. Lately, I've been trying different kinds of cheese. Check out my cheese diary.
I don't eat out a lot lately: the food is expensive and since they give you so much of it, really fattening. I just can't bring myself to order a "light salad" when there's so many other wonderful things on the menu that I wouldn't cook at home. Plus, I'm a member of the "clean plate club"... after all, I paid for it. Having said that, I love "nouvelle cuisine" and all those fussy little California details that I like to call "gay food". In any case, I have a list of rules for restaurants, rules for patrons, and a list of my favorite foods, drinks, and desserts. I'm also working on a review of all the new energy drinks that have come out lately. I like to cook gourmet food from recipes in Bob Appetit and Gourmet magazines.
I'm not really an artists, but you can look at some pumpkins I've created, using a black Sharpie marker and a knife that cuts just enough pumpkin to remove the skin. I think the effect gives it a nice wood-carved look, and I try to do a pumpkin every year.
If you ever want to eat in Fort Collins, here are the best restaurants (according to me).
Here is an article I did about the Polybius videogame.
I found an old homework assignment my brother BJ did in high school with our family genealogy. However, it's done with the care and thought of a fourteen-year-old, so might be wildly incorrect.
The best movies for every year I've been alive.
And some things I missed out on. And my favorite apples.
Just a reminder that Dominic Poon is an idiot.
